Each of SPCA’s Maths Problem Solving Task Cards has a question that applies the use of mathematics to a real life context of animal guardianship (ownership). The aim of these cards is to show students how the use of mathematics is necessary when considering whether to adopt an animal and also when you are an animal guardian. It is also hoped that the problems will be used to generate discussion about the responsible animal guardianship messages they contain in them.
Some of the numbers used in the questions are factually correct (e.g. feed and water quantities) in order to provide opportunities for students to extend their knowledge around animal welfare, the needs of animals and responsible animal guardianship. Therefore, it is important that numbers of factual importance are not altered in order to create problem progressions.
The Maths Problem Solving Task Cards have been bundled into Level 1-4 of the curriculum. Each Maths Problem Solving Task Card contains a student card (green) and a teacher card (blue). The teacher card includes possible anticipated strategies that your students may use.
Please note: Some Maths Problem Solving Task Cards cover a variety of different levels depending on what strategy a student uses. You will notice that some Maths Problem Solving Task Cards are in multiple bundles.
