Compassion Project Overview

SPCA Compassion Project is an early intervention approach for children aged eight to twelve years designed to help increase the humane treatment of all animals, promote self-compassion and increase social confidence. Children develop their ideas of fairness and morality between the ages of eight and twelve by observing the adults in their lives, including their interactions with animals. Children who are exposed to family members mistreating animals may learn that animals are not valued and that behaving aggressively towards animals is an appropriate social interaction to impress friends, to control and intimidate others or to express frustration.

SPCA Compassion Project may assist young children who have mistreated animals or those children who have witnessed animal cruelty in the home or community. It encourages children to explore animals’ behaviours, ways of communication and needs. The activities support children to identify and draw upon the similarities between human and animal behaviour and emotions. They are designed to develop emotional literacy and enhance problem solving skills.

The programme is not intended to be the primary treatment option for childhood animal cruelty but it may supplement the child’s targeted treatment plan that addresses the underlying issues experienced by the child.
