Care and Create: SPCA's Minecraft Education Edition World and
Teaching Resources

Care and Create offers a new and unique platform to explore animal welfare education with your students and support them to develop greater empathy, communication, teamwork, critical thinking skills and digital literacy.

The Care and Create Minecraft World was designed and created by Year 5 and 6 students at Elmwood Normal School, Christchurch. The students developed a series of Minecraft environments that align to existing SPCA teaching units, lessons and reader response activities, as well as the revised NZC Technology learning area. Unit Plans

These units are designed to be completed over a few weeks or a term in addition to your regular classroom programme. Within the unit you will find suggested ideas of how you can use SPCA's Care and Create Minecraft world as a tool for learning.

Safe at Home, Don't Let Me Roam

Levels: 3-4

Students will work through the technological design process to design an enriched cat containment space to support the welfare of cats. This unit offers many opportunities to integrate the creation of digital outcomes.

Single Session Lesson Plans

The aim of these lesson plans is to allow teachers to incorporate animal welfare and responsible animal guardianship messages into a variety of learning contexts that they may already be covering, as we know that it's not always possible to complete one of our full unit plans. SPCA Instructional Readers

These Reader Response Activities are for students to engage with after they have read the accompanying SPCA Instructional Reader. These activities are designed to help extend and consolidate students’ understanding of the key animal care concepts within each story, increase their empathy for the animal characters featured and, of course, support the development of their reading skills and strategies.
