These four Animal Welfare Week Mini-Units are designed to support teachers to carry out a week’s worth of learning themed around animal welfare. They are designed to fit in with your classroom programme by offering animal welfare themed lessons for writing, reading and mathematics every day. They also offer an additional lesson each day, related to another learning area in the curriculum.  

The four Animal Welfare Week Mini-Units are designed for each of the levels of the curriculum for levels 1 to 4. They share a number of activities that have been differentiated to suit the age and learning needs of the students at different levels. However, teachers know their students best and may want to choose and combine learning experiences from more than one of the plans to cater for their students’ needs.

These units are designed as introduction to a variety of animal welfare topics and are suitable for students who have not done any prior learning about animal welfare or worked through any of the units on the SPCA Teachers’ Portal. If you have already used some of the resources from the SPCA Teachers’ Portal with your students, you may need to adapt some of these activities based on the students’ prior knowledge.

Pages 2 and 3 of each unit plan provide an overview of the activities for the week and the preparation required and page 4 provides an overview of the learning intentions covered in each session. You may like to print and use these as a quick reference in your planner throughout the week as you refer to the detailed lesson plans digitally. These overviews may also be helpful if you would like insight into what these units involve if you are thinking of completing one.
