Sadly, the match between a companion animal (pet) and a family is not always successful if emotions are the only consideration given before adopting or purchasing an animal. Consideration of the cost and time involved in properly caring for an animal can be overlooked during spontaneous adoptions or purchases. In some cases, this can lead to an animal being ignored, neglected, given away/rehomed, even abandoned.
This unit gives students the opportunity to use online tools to learn about the costs of having a companion animal whilst developing their numeracy skills, carrying out simple calculations and budgeting. Students will also reflect on how they spend their time and whether or not they have sufficient time available to carry out all of the responsibilities associated with caring for an animal.
